Spend a fortune to play golf with footballers

Wednesday, 06 November 2013 | Xiaolin Chen

Ok, so here’s a press release I just received that caused me some confusion.

They’re auctioning off a chance to play a game of golf with a professional golfer and two footballers. The bidding is already up to $2,020 and there’s still 41 days left to go. This looks like it’ll raise some serious cash. I assumed this had to be a fundraiser for charity but the press release mentioned no cause.

I figured that couldn’t be right. As jerky as sports people can be, these guys couldn’t just be straight up charging people to play sport with them.

So where is the money going?

I managed to find the recipient on the bidding page (which the release also doesn’t link to) , it’s Canberra Grammer School.

A poor unfortunate private school.

Ok fine, whatever. Still the simple fact that the release skips over that this is a charity auction is quite amusing. Perhaps they think the people who will bid for this are not the kind of person who would really care?

Canberra’s online auction specialists, ALLBIDS, have joined forces with Canberra’s greatest golfer, Brendan Jones, to set up a game of golf and lunch with two of the best Rugby half backs of the modern era – the Wallabies’ George Gregan, and All Blacks’ Justin Marshall.

“This truly is one of the most unique sporting experiences of a lifetime,” said Rob Evans, CEO and Founder of ALLBIDS.

“You could ask George about ‘that famous tackle’, discuss the All Blacks’ game strategy with Justin, or learn the secret to the perfect golf swing with PGA golfer, Brendan Jones,” said Rob, who is himself a keen golfer and active participant in Canberra’s golfing community.

The auction was the brainchild of Brendan Jones and his wife Adele. Brendan has become great mates with George and Justin and they devised the ultimate corporate sporting golfing experience for a group of five to buy at auction with ALLBIDS.

“Bidders just need to go to the ALLBIDS website and make a bid. It’s the perfect opportunity to just meet your sporting heroes, or deliver an awesome corporate event,” Rob said.

The auction, which is now live at www.allbids.com.au, will run through until 17 December and will see the winning bidder take four friends for a round of 18 holes at the Royal Canberra Golf Club on 6 February 2014. They will swap between playing with Justin Marshall and George Gregan in one group, and Brendan Jones in the other. The experience will be capped off by lunch at the club overlooking the 18th green.

“This is a great way to support our community and the experience on offer could see a group of friends live out their sporting dream,” Rob concluded.
