Local car lovers are likely to be feeling excited – and their pockets, a little lighter – with a brand new classic and unique car auction announced today by ALLBIDS.

It’s hard to believe, given the nation’s capital is also home to Australia’s biggest annual car festival, Summernats, but since the 1990s Canberra hasn’t had its own unique and classic car auction.

Instead, enthusiasts have had to travel to Sydney, Melbourne, or even further, to pursue their passion.

Now, thanks to growing local business ALLBIDS, buyers and sellers have a place to share their knowledge, swap stories, and buy and sell their vehicles, with a brand new online auction event being held this May.

“For car lovers there’s nothing quite like the appeal of driving a unique car,” ALLBIDS Business Development Manager Ben Hastings says.

“And, when it comes to unique and classic cars, Canberrans have some of Australia’s rarest and most desirable vehicles in the country – they’re lovingly looked after here in the capital and surrounding towns, and often they’re hidden away in private collections.

“We’re really pleased to be able to provide this forum for enthusiasts to see what’s out there, make new contacts, maybe find themselves a new project or find the right owner to pass their beloved vehicle on to.

“Our message to everyone is, if you’re in the market to buy a unique or classic car, or you appreciate the beauty and craftsmanship that only collector cars can provide, you are going to love what is coming up for sale in the May auction,” said Ben.

Here is a sneak peek at some of the amazing cars that are already entered, to be featured in the auction:

Meet “Doris”, a 1950 MG TD Roadster.

“Doris”, a 1950 MG TD Roadster that was restored to show standards some years ago and was subsequently awarded second place at a Concours event. She was then sold to Col Drew Motors in Sydney, and was the original MG TD on display in their showroom. Owned locally since 2005, Doris has undergone sympathetic improvements to enhance her driving experience. Owner James describes her as “a wonderful car that will only appreciate in years to come. In the meantime, enjoy ‘Doris’ for weekend pleasure trips or as a great club car”.

An iconic 1961 Cadillac Fleetwood Limousine.

Or you could fast forward to the swinging 60s, and check out the iconic 1961 Cadillac Fleetwood Limousine. One of only 926 built, this is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to own a true ‘survivor car’ that’s part of motoring and Canberra history! Originally owned by the Embassy of Ghana, the car spent its early years in China and was later taken to New York before being transferred here as a diplomat’s car. Owner Tom says, “What makes this car special is that it still retains its original documentation, and has featured in many celebrity events, TV advertisements, weddings, a movie and more. Truly, a unique and rare car!”

Rolls Silver Shadow 1985.

Take a look at this 1980 Rolls-Royce Silver Shadow II. A car that many of us could only have dreamed of owning, but this may finally be that opportunity. This Silver Shadow II is presented in excellent condition, and is finished in a very rare colour combination with a black vinyl roof. The original sales receipt and original books have been kept, and the vehicle has averaged a low 5000kms per year since it hit the road.

988 VN SS Group A Replica.

For those who like their classic cars with a little more muscle, there’s a 1988 VN SS Group A Replica, another pristine example on offer from the team at Garage Thirty Customs. There is very little giving away that this is a replica. Down to the finest details, this VN has been fitted with a genuine Group A interior, steering wheel, body kit, 17” wheels, and even the build plate #213R with supporting dash emblem.

A rare 1990 VN HSV SV5000 will be included in this unique car auction.

And finally, a rare 1990 VN HSV SV5000 is presented in sensational SV Racing Green and is a vehicle you will not want to miss. This particular example has only 132,000kms on the clock, an immaculate interior and good paintwork. The original wheels and suspension are included with the sale. Local Canberra business Garage Thirty Customs says, “Holden fans won’t want to miss an opportunity to purchase this appreciating asset at a very good price. With only 359 in total made, this vehicle – number 306 – represents an iconic HSV perfectly. Get in before the prices on these rise!”

That’s just a few examples to whet the appetite, with many more vehicles expected to be on the market in May, said Ben.

“Entries are invited, but must close on April 30th and our spots are filling up fast – so don’t delay,” he said.

If you have a unique car you’d like to sell with ALLBIDS, you can list it here and keep an eye on the auction as it happens as well. You can also register to receive news and information about upcoming events, or follow ALLBIDS on Facebook.

All the cars will be available for inspection in Fyshwick prior to final bids being accepted.

Will you be checking out the auction and seeing yourself behind the wheel of a unique or classic car? What would be your dream car, and why?
