An impressive single owner example of a Inka Orange 1602 coupe!

This impressive single owner example of a BMW 1602 coupe was ordered through Capital Motors, Sydney, and was in fully compliant Aussie specs as can be seen on the delivery certificate from BMW Munich. The car was then collected by the vendor in person from the factory in Munich on the 29/06/1972 after seeing it coming through the final inspection hall during the pre-delivery process.

After using the car in England for a few months the car was taken to Holland where the vendor worked for 2 years. The car was on German tourist (export plates) during that time which meant that during the OPEC fuel crisis in 1973, when no Dutch cars were allowed on the roads on the weekends, that it was the only car on the Dutch freeways. As quoted "I was very popular with my friends during that period".

The technicians in the factory in Munich noted to run the car in fast once 1,200 miles was over, and when the first oil change was done by a BMW dealer (this was done in England). This recommendation to run it in fast was fully obeyed by the car's 22 year old owner, and is probably the reason why no work has been needed on the engine or gearbox during the fifty three years of ownership. The only major item was a new differential in 2009, and a new propshaft in 2019. Otherwise it was the usual water pump replacement (about every 15 years). The suspension was rebuilt 4 years ago with new (original spec) shock absorbers, front struts and rear springs. At the same a set of new tyres.

The BMW dealer in Rotterdam, Holland, insisted that the new car be rust proofed and they sprayed some bitumen product in the doors, bonnet, boot and under the car. Thus no rust in those areas, ever. The receipt for this work is in the folder ! The only area that rust eventually appeared was on the firewall, which happily they did not spray with bitumen. The engine was removed in 2019, the firewall repaired and all engine seals and gaskets replaced.

The BMW was shipped to Australia at the end of 1974 where it was used as a daily driver until 1976 when the vendor was posted to Asia for work, returning in 1981. The car was basically stored undercover during that time, and registered in his mother's name. Thereafter on my return I drove the car regularly until the 1990's when he relocated to Melbourne. For the next 10 years the car was stored in a dry shed on my farm in NSW.

On his return to NSW about 20 years ago, the car was resprayed. The original hubcaps rusted through but a new set of 'dress rims' were fitted 12 years ago. New (original spec) carpets were put in 3 years ago, and then the Cocomats (tailor made in America) were installed 2 years ago. At the same time a new Continental radio was installed but with a '70's retro look - it has Bluetooth and phone - & new speakers.

The car was retired 17 years ago and has Club plates since then. It is used reasonably regularly on car club runs around the Southern Highlands. It is now time to go to a new enthusiast.
