Mural by Students is Being Auctioned to Help Farmers

Wednesday, 26 September 2018 | Mike Leano

ALLBIDS is auctioning off a mural made by students from The Lakes College and Mercy College, together with rapper and artist Losty. It's an artistic rendering of a farmer surveying a dry farmland, with an empty speech bubble left there specifically by its creators for customisation.

The proceeds of the sale will go towards supporting rural initiatives through the Aussie Farmers Foundation - an organisation established to help farmers during tough times. And these are indeed tough times: there's currently a drought across New South Wales and Queensland, which is said to be the "worst in living memory".

The dry spell has reduced the supply of grass and hay given to farm animals, and has even affected the production of feed supplements.

Throughout the country, efforts have been made to lend struggling farmers a hand. This mural may seem to be a mere drop in the bucket, but it will go a long way in aiding farming communities in need.

Mural info

Here are some details about the mural:

  • It's made from iron cladding with a pine wood brace.
  • The mural measures 240cm high and 22cm wide.
  • The panels unscrew to allow transportation.
  • Transportation is at the cost of the buyer. However, the vendor is happy to help in moving the mural in whatever way they can.
  • The mural would be perfect for a pub bistro, bare shed wall or rural business.

The whole effort to create the mural and auction it off is spearheaded by Art4Agriculture, a network of young people who are passionate about sharing the pivotal role of Australian farmers in feeding the world.

Things that farmers think about

The creators of the mural also produced a video titled Healthy Communities - A Shared Responsibility, which talks about the importance of cattle farmers and highlights the concerns they think about.

As emphasised by the video, farmers need to consider the following:

  • The weather and the impact this weather has on the land.
  • They need to think about water - and in Australia, the lack of water.
  • Farmers need to consider the environment, and more and more pressure is being put on farmers to be environmentally friendly and change their agricultural practices to help combat climate change.
  • They need to look after their animals with animal welfare a top priority in their day-to-day work. After all, these animals are their bread and butter.
  • Safety of their workers and safe food production is also a thought.
  • Farmers consider the way new technology can support them.
  • They sweat about money and how to pay for all of this while still supporting their family. Families who often work together on the farm. Children are doing chores and caring for animals before and after school - all to put nutritious food on our tables. Or to ensure we are a healthy community.

In essence, farmers have a lot to think about and we need to think about how we can support them. The mural, through the support of Aussie Farmers Foundation, is certainly one way.
