Ethical disposal methods saved 11 tonnes of unwanted assets from landfill

Monday, 08 September 2014 | Muhammad Awais

Unwanted items don’t have to become waste. At ALLBIDS we live by ethical methods of asset disposal. We recently helped one of our valued government vendors dispose of their assets while contributing towards environmental sustainability.

It was The Australian Institute of Health and Welfare (AIHW) that were required to downsize during a recent office move. A new office meant new furniture and as a result there were 800 redundant assets of furniture and IT equipment that required disposal.

ALLBIDS were able to step in and provide a complete asset disposal solution using the 5 methods of ethical disposal for the Department, as well as provide best value for money during the process.

How did we do it?

Step 1 We reviewed situation – an audit of assets required to be disposed of and an assessment of Auction Value was undertaken.

Step 2 We recovered the assets – assets were divided into groups of commercial value, metal recycling steel, metal recycling copper, metal recycling aluminium, recyclable materials and general waste.

Step 3 We reused the assets – assets that were of value and able to be used in a commercial environment were offered via ALLBIDS platform for sale directly from the AIHW premises – the ONSITE & ONLINE methodology proved a huge saving for the Department.

Step 4 We recycled – assets that had no reuse value were recycled by classidentified during the ‘recover’ process

Step 5 We provided tailored reporting – a comprehensive report of all assets disposed of was provided to the Department so that funds could be allocated appropriately and the assets decommissioned.

What did it cost AIHW?

AIHW had quotes of $60,000 to remove all assets with a reuse value and $20,000 to remove assets for recycling purposes. An alternative to ALLBIDS would have cost approximately $80,000

ALLBIDS were able to provide the entire service to AIHW at a net cost of just $8 153. The savings were approximately $71 000 in value for money over the next best quote.

Transparency and environmental contribution

Throughout the entire process, ALLBIDS were able to provide transparent disposal AIHW’s of unwanted assets, as well as tailored reporting to meet their business needs. ALLBIDs were able to reuse 6.8 tonnes of AIHW’s redundant assets and recycle a whopping 11.4 tonnes which would have otherwise become landfill.

The AIHW were recipients of the ALLBIDS Environmental Sustainability Award for their positive contribution to environmental sustainability.
