This year’s ALLBIDS Appraisal Day brought Canberra a touch of the iconic ‘Antiques Roadshow’ flair, offering locals a chance to uncover the hidden value in their treasured possessions. It was a day of discovery, nostalgia and excitement as people brought in everything from family heirlooms to unique collectibles for expert appraisal at our Fyshwick auction rooms.

One of the standout finds of the day was a stunning five-piece Tiffany & Co. Paris antique tea and coffee set, which captivated our experts with its exquisite craftsmanship and timeless elegance. This extraordinary set later went under the hammer at ALLBIDS, achieving an impressive $5,512.50 including buyer's premium.

Held in partnership with EHVA, ALLBIDS' premier marketplace for fine and decorative arts, antiques and collectibles, the event showcased the passion and expertise of our team. The day celebrated the stories behind every item while giving attendees professional advice on navigating the world of online auctions from intricate jewellery to timeless art, wine, coins & more.

Guests soaked up the relaxed atmosphere with live acoustic music and tasty treats from Melted & Lepi Bakery, all while lounging in styled vintage seating areas. The free parking and a chance to win a $500 ALLBIDS voucher were the cherries on top!

One visitor shared their experience:"I brought my aunt’s jewellery for appraisal by the ALLBIDS team. After exploring the beautiful pieces in the Emporium, I enjoyed a cup of tea and a pastry while chatting with other guests about their treasures. It was such a warm and welcoming experience—like stepping into a community of stories and shared memories." – Sue Cleary (pictured below)

Cost management is crucial in determining your overall profitability in the business world. Regarding material handling and logistics, forklifts are indispensable tools in various industries. However, the upfront cost of buying brand-new forklifts can be a significant financial burden for businesses. One cost-effective alternative that has gained popularity recently is buying forklifts at auctions.

This blog will explore the advantages of forklift auctions and how they can help your business maximise profits.

The Benefits of Buying Forklifts at Auction

    1. Cost Savings

The standout advantage of forklift auctions is the substantial cost savings. Forklifts at auctions are often at a lower price, making them appealing to businesses looking to reduce their capital expenditure. This can free up financial resources that can be reinvested into other areas of your business.

  1. Variety and Selection

Forklift auctions offer various makes, models, and sizes, giving you the flexibility to choose equipment that suits your business needs. Whether you require a small electric forklift for indoor operations or a rugged diesel forklift for outdoor tasks, auctions provide diverse options for different industries and applications.

  1. Well-Maintained Equipment

Contrary to the misconception that auctioned equipment is in poor condition, the forklifts available at auctions are well-maintained. Businesses sell their forklifts at auctions for various reasons, including equipment upgrades or downsizing, rather than due to their poor performance. This means you can often find high-quality forklifts that have been properly serviced and cared for.

  1. Competitive Bidding

Forklift auctions create a competitive environment among buyers, which can work in your favour. With multiple bidders vying for the same equipment, prices can remain reasonable, and you may secure a fantastic deal. However, it's essential to set a budget and stick to it to avoid overbidding.

  1. Potential for Customisation

When purchasing a new forklift, you're limited to the available options and features from the manufacturer. In contrast, buying at a forklift auction allows for potential customisation. You can buy a basic forklift and invest in changes or additions for your specific requirements, further optimising your cost savings.

How to Navigate Forklift Auctions

  1. Research and Inspection

Before participating in a forklift auction, doing your homework is essential. Research the auction platforms or local auctions in your area. Once you've identified potential auctions, inspect the equipment thoroughly. Take note of any wear and tear, maintenance records, and the overall condition of the forklifts you're interested in.

  1. Set a Budget

Establish a clear budget before attending the auction and stick to it. Getting caught up in the excitement of bidding is easy, so having a predetermined spending limit will help you avoid overspending.

  1. Take an experts opinion

If you're not well-versed in forklifts, consider taking an experienced opinion from a mechanic or forklift operator. Their expertise can be invaluable in assessing the equipment's capabilities, condition and value.

  1. Be Patient and Strategic

Auctions can be fast-paced, so it's essential to remain patient and strategic in your bidding. Wait for the right moment to place your bids and avoid getting into bidding wars that could drive up the price unnecessarily.

In today's competitive business landscape, cutting costs without compromising quality is vital for maximising profitability. Buying forklifts at auction is a cost-effective strategy that offers numerous benefits, from significant cost savings to equipment customisation. By researching, setting a budget, and attending auctions strategically, you can tap into the potential of forklift auctions to enhance your business operations and boost your bottom line.

So, why pay full price when you can secure quality forklifts at a fraction of the cost through auctions? Make the smart choice and start maximising your profits today!

ALLBIDS auctionplace is ranked as Australia’s #1 most trusted auction house by numerous online reviewers. This reputation is what has led to us becoming a preferred distributor of retail returns. With items ranging from electronics to homewares, buying retail returns at online auctions is the leading way to buy returned items in Australia.

Offering this service at our Caringbah location, we naturally have a lot of questions come through our door about this process. Here are the most frequently asked questions about retail returns and the answers to solve them.

    What are retail returns?

Retail returns are products that have been returned, are end-of-line or surplus stock, or change of mind customer returns. In some cases, these goods may have had limited use and have been removed from factory packaging.

Are retailers allowed to sell returned items as new?

This largely depends on the condition and nature of the product. They can sell the returned items if the product remains unopened and in the same condition as the purchase. However, once the product has been removed from its original packaging and has any signs of use or fault, it cannot be sold as new.

What do retail stores do with returned products?

Online auction houses are the preferred method of reselling retail return goods; this is where many retailers send their returned goods for resale. The benefit of buying known returned items at a trusted auction house is that you guarantee that the items are genuine and don’t risk purchasing a counterfeit item.

ALLBIDS Caringbah location specialises specifically in the auction of retail return goods. You can trust the staff to use their expertise to provide accurate product descriptions and know that each item is tested for functionality.

    What does ‘open box’ mean?

Open box is a term that refers to returned items that have been previously opened and removed from their original packaging. These items are still classified as new and unused when there are no clear signs of use. These are then repackaged and prepared for auction.

What is ALLBIDS’ product condition of retail returns?

The product condition of retail returns can vary depending on the severity of use before being returned. This can range from being completely new, to having minor or major faults.

New: Retail returns classified as new are products that have not been previously used, even if removed from the original packaging. This could include end-of-line goods or change-of-mind returns.

Minor faults: Retail returns classified as having minor faults mean that they are not in new condition due to small problems with the items. This could include faults like a loose thread or minor scratches, so the item still functions as intended but is not in perfect condition.

Major faults: Retail returns classified as having major faults are items that differ greatly from the original purpose and description of the item. These goods are often discarded but can also be sold at online auctions with an accurate description of each fault.

    Where to buy return pallets?

Return pallets are pallets of the store’s returned items. This is where major retailers compile all returned items for resale at a larger scale than single items. If you are looking to buy return pallets in Australia, they are typically sold through auction houses due to their trusted reputation.

What to Look for When Buying a Second-Hand Bicycle

Buying a used bicycle can be trickier than expected. It’s best to have a general idea of what you’re looking for before making an informed purchase. With the cycling industry rapidly changing this can be tricky. Inspecting the parts of a bicycle can best ensure you make the right purchase. What follows is a list of factors you should consider, before buying a used bicycle.

Type of Bicycle: Firstly, understand what type of bike you’re looking for. If you’re riding to work each day, a road bike would be appropriate or if you enjoy traversing unbeaten paths, a mountain bike would be the go. It’s also important to look at the year model. More recently made bicycles will be more expensive and older bikes will be cheaper. As a buyer you are best to look for a happy medium to ensure the parts are of a better standard and to save a few dollars.

The Frame: The frame being the centerpiece holding a bike together is the most expensive part to replace. Small chips and scrapes are fine though it’s important to look for large dents or bends. If you’re looking at carbon models, frame dents are a particular worry as it increases the chance of breaks and fails in the future. The frame is also important in determining what size bicycle you will need. The link below to help determine what size bike and frame you will need:

Tires: The tires of most bikes are affordable and easy to replace. Tires are easily come by, and small punctures can be patched in the short term. Wheel rims are important to inspect as they are worn down by rim brakes over time. Rims not only hold the tire but provide a braking surface which if damaged can lead to accidents. Check the spokes for large bends as this is what loosens and breaks the tire.

The Gears: To check the quality of the gears focus on the condition of the chainrings and the cassette. For those unsure, the cassette is the cluster of sprockets on the back wheel and chainring is the sprockets on the front. The cassette has a larger number of teeth though both are equally important in propelling your bike forward. The cassette should sport smoothly rounded teeth and are in bad condition if they are pointy and sharp. If this is the case, then it is likely that the chain is worn and will need to be replaced. When replacing the chain, the chainrings and cassettes won’t need to be unless damaged as stated before.

Brake Pads: Working brakes are crucial to bring your bike to a stop. To see if the brakes are worn out, there will be wear lines on the pads themselves. Small wear lines aren’t of great concern SO it’s important to look for larger indents. Fortunately bicycle brakes are cheap and relatively easy for a novice to repair.

Saddle and Pedals: The saddle and pedal of a bike being worn is simply a sign of use. This isn’t necessarily a detractor being these parts are better switched to something more suited to your requirements anyway. The pedals should be changed to suit whichever shoes you decide to use when riding, e.g., pedals with pins if you’re wearing trainers and lipless pedals if you’re wearing road cycling shoes. A saddle is best replaced to improve your comfort when riding. Buying and replacing saddles and pedals should be factored into when buying a second-hand bicycle.

Using a Reputable Source: Buying from a known and widely used sellers provides a greater level of security. Facebook and eBay are commonly used though individual sellers have been known to lack transparency. Consider the cost of postage, which can be alleviated all together by purchasing locally. Reputable local businesses should be your go too. Regardless the most important step is inspecting the bike yourself and considering each of these factors.

Extra Equipment: When purchasing a bicycle also be prepared for other necessary expenses such as a helmet. Additional costs should be factored in as various utensils will be required such as a mini pump, spare inner tube and a multi tool.

Understanding the various functions of a bicycle helps to make the right choice when buying second hand bike. With this information, the next most important step is to find a good deal. When looking across the various online shopping platforms that exist be sure to check out Canberra’s auction houses. ALLBIDS have recently received an assortment of bicycles to auction off on behalf of Canberra’s police. These police recovered goods close for auction this Friday (8th April).
